iSCSI

0. Overview

     0-1. What is iSCSI

iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface), a storage technology based on the Internet and SCSI-3 protocols, was proposed by the IETF and became the official standard on February 11, 2003. Compared to traditional SCSI technology, iSCSI technology has three revolutionary changes:

1. Transfer the SCSI protocol originally used only for this machine over the TCP/IP network, so that the connection distance can be extended infinitely.
2. The number of connected servers is unlimited (the original SCSI-3 limit is 15)
3. Due to the server architecture, online expansion and dynamic deployment are also possible.

What is the principle of iSCSI? iSCSI is simply Internet SCSI, which uses the most common IP network to carry SCSI commands to achieve the block level data transfer required by the storage area network (SAN). SANs have always been built using Fibre Channel, which is not only expensive, but the barriers to complex management and technology are prohibitive for most companies. The goal of iSCSI is to enable enterprises to enjoy the benefits of SAN at a lower cost - true storage virtualization, flexible server and storage resource integration, and high-speed backup/reserve capabilities.

     0-2. Lab Preparation

Before doing this lab, the environment must be set up. The lab environment configuration is like below table or refers to the preparation article (Storage Space, iscsi and FSRM Lab Environment Preparation). Furthermore, there is another lab must complete before this lab start, Storage Chapter 1.

1. Prepare 2 iscsi disks for the lab

1-1. Configure the second iscsi disk

The first iscsi disk naled "iscsi01" has been created from the storage pool at the last lab. Here the second iscsi disk will be created from an unallocated status.
Right click on the start and click "Disk Management"

There is an unknown disk 20.0 GB. Click "OK" to initialize it.

The status of the disk just initialized becomes BASIC but it still remains unallocated. Right click on it then select "New Single Volume..."

Click "Next"

Keep the max size and click "Next"

Select the letter "V" for the drive, click "Next"

Type "iscsi02" as the volume label, then click "Next"

Click "Finish"

Now there are 2 disks "iscsi01 (O:)" and "iscsi02 (V:)" ready to use.

Open file explorer, click "This PC". Again, those 2 iSCSI disks are ready to use.
Q (iscsi01) 7.92 GB is a virtual disk which created from the storage pool.
V (iscsi02) 19.9 GB is as a hard drive which attached directly to this server.
