SCCM Chapter 7 and 8 - Configure SCCM, Distribution Point and Boot Image

All Chapters about SCCM

7.    Configure SCCM

7-1.  Discovery Methods

                                                         7-1-1.      Active Directory Forest Discovery

Enable AD forest discovery is to discover the sites and subnets.

                                                         7-1-2.      Active Directory Group Discovery

Enable AD group discovery is to discover local group, global group, universal group, the membership within those group and having an option to discover the membership of distribution groups. Also, it can discover the computers have logged in to the domain in a given period of time.

                                                         7-1-3.      Active Directory System Discovery

Enable AD system discovery is to find computers in Active Directory Domain Services. It can specify a location like domain or container for the AD search. Also, it provides a good option to specify additional AD object attributes to discover. It is optional to exclude computers from discovery by setting “Only discover computers that have logged on to a domain in a given period of time” or “Only discover computers that have updated their computer account password in a given period of time”

                                                         7-1-4.      Active Directory User Discovery

Enable AD user discovery is to find user accounts in Active Directory Domain Services. .It can specify a location like domain or container for the AD search. There is a good option to specify additional AD object attributes to discover.

7-1-5.      Verify those 4 discovery methods are all enable

Figure 31: Verify those 4 discovery methods are all enable

7-2.   Configure Boundaries

A boundary can be configured as one of the 4 different types such as “IP subnet”, “IP address range”, “IP v6 prefix” or “Active Directory site”. I use “Active directory site” as the configuration of the boundary. A boundary must be in a boundary group to be functional.

7-2-1.      Create a new boundary group names “JamesLab Boundary Group”

7-2-2.      Add the “Default-first-Name-site” to the new boundary group and select the SCCM server “SCCMDP” as the site system server.

Figure 32: select the SCCM server “SCCMDP” as the site system server

7-3.   Add and Configure Site System Roles

7-3-1.      Select 3 roles for this Lab

Ø  Application Catalog web Service point
Ø  Application Catalog website point
Ø  Fallback status point

8.    Configure SCCM Distribution Point and Boot Image

8-1.   Configure Distribution Point

8-1-1.      When “PXE support for clients” is enabled, Windows Deployment Service will be installed.

8-1-2.      Verify it from the service control panel.

Figure 34: Verify PXE is enable

8-1-3.      Verify WDS is installed and the service is running

Figure 35: Verify WDS is installed and service is running

8-1-4.      Enable “multicast to simultaneously send data to multiple clients” is a network optimization method which can reduce network traffic when deployment the same operating system image to multiple client computers.

Figure 36: Enable “multicast to simultaneously send data to multiple clients”

8-2.   Configure and Distribute Boot image

8-2-1.      To enable the command support on both boot images

Figure 37: Both boot images are updated distribution points

                                                              8-2-2.      Distribute Content

Figure 38: Distribute content on both boot images

8-2-3.      Verify the images have been distributed successfully when the content status becomes a green circle

Figure 39: Verify the images have been distributed successfully

8-2-4.      Verify “sysop” account is valid to access

Figure 40: Verify “sysop” account is valid to access

8-3.  Create Client Package

8-3-1.      Create package “Device Management Client Transfer” from Definition

Figure 41: Create a package from Definition

8-3-2.      Verify the status of the package “Device Management Client Transfer” distribute content is green
